While most pharmaceutical companies know the importance of accurate packaging, labeling issues are at the root of approximately 10 to 20 percent of all recalls.
"Unfortunately, even the relatively minor labeling errors have been the cause of a significant number of recalls in recent years. So whether your product has an incorrect label on an item or the label itself has a mistake, it is critically important that the situation is handled properly and in full transparency with regulators and consumers," PharmPro explains.
As the news source notes, mislabeling tends to be accidental in the majority of cases. However, by at least thinking ahead and identifying probable labeling mistakes, companies can go a long way to prevent recalls in the first place.
Pharmaceutical manufacturers should consider keeping as many steps of the design process internal as possible to curb issues. Once a label has been fully designed, it can then be sent to external printing companies for production.
The Food & Drug Administration has been cracking down on pharmaceutical and supplement companies over labeling issues. Most recently, MADE was forced to recall products because they were mislabeled.
