  • Meat Distributors Need to Stop Horsing Around with Custom Food Labels

Latest Scandal Prompts Euro Concern Over Custom Food Labels

Irish manufacturer B&F Meats was shut down after it was discovered that the producers were selling meat with fraudulent custom food labels. The firm exported products under a label written in Czech that translated as "beef" but really contained horse meat, BBC News Europe reported. This particular case of horse meat being passed off as beef is just the latest in a recent scandal that has rocked most of Europe. The crisis had started in the United Kingdom, where popular supermarkets were found to have stocked beef products that were actually made from horses.

Germany and France Up In Arms over Misleading Food Product Labels
After the horse meat scandal that swept through Europe last month, France and Germany are now petitioning for stricter food product labels on their meat products, IOL News reported. The two countries are demanding that products containing meat include labeling that states the origin of where the meat is coming from. The German farm minister, Isle Aigner, said the two countries expect to see origin labeling across all 27 countries in the European Union as soon as possible.

The European Union Health Commissioner, Tonio Borg, said the EU Commission is working to speed up the new labeling regulations that would require meat producers to state the country of origin, added the source. However, Borg said the EU Commission board is facing resistance from some countries that do not want the origin to be printed on labels.

European consumers are demanding country of origin food labels as the horse meat scandal continues.

  • WTO Didn't Think U.S. Custom Food Labels Were So "COOL"

WTO Deadline For Custom Food Labels Not Far Away

The World Trade Association (WTO) compliance deadline for custom food labels in regard to the United States' Country of origin labeling (COOL) Act is fast approaching. The WTO had previously refused to acknowledge the COOL law, saying that is was illegal and unfair. However, the United States believes the WTO did not have the authority to strike down the American Law. In an effort to achieve compliance before the deadline, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) amended COOL regulations and sent them back to the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for approval.

Both Canada and Mexico rallied against the COOL labels, arguing the legislation disparately affected their animal product exports and prices. The WTO agreed with the countries, providing the basis for its rejection of U.S. COOL laws.

Country Has Alternative Solution for COOL Food Label Printing
The COOL food label printing law was passed back in 2002 as part of the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act. The reason behind COOL was to help consumers understand where their food was coming from.

In addition to the USDA regulatory retooling, the international trade specialists at Stewart and Stewart law firm recently released a 11-page legal analysis that identifies ways the country could bring COOL into WTO compliance while still keeping the substance of the legislation intact. It also made recommendations for future label templates - such as "[this is a] Product of an animal born in [country x] and raised and slaughtered in the United States.

  • Rev Up Custom Labels and Stickers for National Nutrition Month

Celebrate National Nutrition Month with Snazzy New Custom Labels and Stickers

    custom labels and stickers

    Celebrate

Lightning Labels, a custom label and sticker printing leader, is encouraging manufacturers to celebrate National Nutrition Month in March with a new temporary packaging design. Less than two months ago, millions of consumers placed healthy diet and exercise at the top of their New Year's resolution lists. While more than half of Americans set goals for 2013, an estimated 88 percent of all resolutions fail, according to a 2007 psychology study, as reported by The Washington Post. While January is already in the rearview mirror and Valentine's Day came and went quickly, many consumers have already abandoned their year's goals. National Nutrition Month is a great time to help them get back on track with a healthy lifestyle that revolves around your products.

Invest In New Ideas for Packaging Without Sacrificing Bottom Line

National Nutrition Month is all about helping people make informed, healthy choices when it comes to eating and drinking. Lightning Labels wants brands to make smart choices too, especially when it comes to testing and investing in ideas for packaging. "With the gift-giving holidays out of the way, brands can focus on unique, fun marketing opportunities," said AnneMarie Campbell,  Lightning Labels Business Development Manager. "National Nutrition Month is a great time to try new packaging and nutraceutical label design. Even though consumers may not have stuck to their resolutions, they're still as health-conscious as ever, and they're looking for products that help them achieve and maintain a more positive lifestyle. Brands should capitalize on this by incorporating National Nutrition Month into their stickers and labels. With Lightning Labels' digital printing, finding a fresh temporary or long-term look for product packaging is easy, affordable and enjoyable."

3 Ways to Incorporate Nutrition Awareness Into Product Stickers and Labels

National Nutrition Month is a great time to try something new with products' stickers and labels. When designing custom packaging that embraces health awareness, consider these three tips: 1. Add An Image or Two Placing an image on product labels is a great way to catch shoppers' attention in stores and online. As they browse through items, they're likely to spend more time examining and considering ones that have intriguing and unique photos or illustrations. These images may feature the healthy ingredients in a product or depict how the brand fits into an active lifestyle. Just remember to choose visual aspects that are discernible in small format and from far away! 2. Educate Consumers With Relevant and Relatable Text Because St. Patrick's Day and spring holiday preparations occur in March, consumers may not realize it's National Nutrition Month. This is the perfect chance to educate them and show that a company cares about their well-being. By explaining the importance of health and how a brand is relevant on the packaging, a manufacturer can increase brand recognition and reputation, boost customer relationships and ultimately fuel a loyal consumer following. While health may be a serious topic, consider keeping text lighthearted, brief and original. Using a statistic is a great way to harness interest. 3. Don't Forget Nutraceutical Labels Nutrition month is a great time to jazz up nutraceutical labels. While strict laws govern what must be included in the Nutrition Fact Chart, consider adding a little color or a new font in the ingredients list to make products stand out. Emphasize healthy features like fiber or protein content and natural or organic ingredients. To help businesses get started with new custom labels and stickers for National Nutrition Month, Lightning Labels is offering a discount that runs through March 1, 2013. • Seafood Labels: There's Something Fishy Going On

Food Labels On Fish Mislead Consumers

A new report from Oceana, the world's largest ocean conservation group, revealed the results of a two-year investigation into food labels on seafood sold at restaurants and supermarkets. The nonprofit concluded that 74 percent of sushi restaurants, 38 percent of restaurants and 19 percent of grocery stores sold at least one mislabeled fish product.

More Regulations Needed to Combat Illegal Labeling
Although the U.S. Food and Drug Administration prohibits falsified labeling of food under the Food, Drug and Cosmetic act, veteran fishmonger Dirk Fucik told the Chicago Tribune that the mislabeling of seafood has gone on for a long time. Fucik said the United States imports approximately 25 million pounds of Vietnamese basa catfish every year but that name is never printed on labels or menus.

To protect consumers, Oceana's seafood fraud campaign director Beth Lowell advises shoppers and restaurant diners to ask questions about their fish. If businesses aren't willing to answer questions about their product or they can't show consumers the whole fish, the retailer may be part of the fish fraud mislabeling, Lowell said.

  • Custom Labels & Stickers Help Consumers Make Heart-Healthy Choices

Happy Heart Month!  Are Your Custom Labels and Stickers Ready?

American Heart Month and Custom Labels and Stickers Help consumers celebrate heart health throughout the year with custom labels and stickers.
Millions of consumers are focused on their hearts this month, but not just in the spirit of Valentine's Day. Health organizations have named February American Heart Month to raise awareness of heart disease and healthy living. Every year, more than 700,000 people in the U.S. have a heart attack and roughly 600,000 die from heart disease, making it the leading cause of fatality in the country, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Organizations and brands have taken the opportunity to embrace Heart Month by educating followers and helping them make healthy lifestyle changes.

Why Should My Printed Labels and Stickers Market Heart Health?

There are many reasons why marketing around Heart Month and other healthy causes is a good idea. First, it gives consumers a better understanding of your brand's personality. By encouraging heart awareness on your printed labels and stickers, you're showing consumers the cause is important to your company and that you care about consumers' health. In addition to boosting your brand's reputation, this helps shoppers understand that you are a reliable health resource and that your products are a part of a positive lifestyle. Meanwhile, revamping your packaging is a great way to reel in new customers and remind existing consumers of the value of your products. For example, changing your label background color to bright red for Heart Month is sure to catch shoppers' attention. Finally, because digital printing makes temporary design changes extremely easy and affordable, there's no reason not to try a new temporary packaging design.

3 Ways to Show Your Love for Heart Month with Custom Packaging Ideas

To give your products a makeover that will attract consumers and boost your brand cred during Heart Month, consider the following custom packaging ideas: 1. Add a Splash of Color Red isn't just the color of heart month - it's an extremely powerful color, and seeing red can increase a person's breathing and pulse rate. It's no wonder advertisers love it! Red can stimulate a variety of feelings and sensations, including energy, appetite and urgency, according to ThinkQuest. Throwing a lot or just a hint of red into your labels could boost your product's visibility and appeal. 2. Use Text To Educate Consumers Consider incorporating a small amount of text in your product's packaging to explain Heart Month and how your product fits into a healthy lifestyle. Remember to keep phrases short, unique and intriguing. It's a good idea to highlight any special product ingredients and use buzzwords related to wellness, health and weight loss. 3. Take Consumers Beyond February Sure, February is the official month for heart health, but that doesn't mean you can't help consumers get and stay healthy throughout the year. Consider changing up your custom labels periodically to include different inspirational quotes related to well-being or give exercise tips. Digital printing can place high-quality images and texts on labels, so don't limit your brand's marketing capability by keeping packaging too simple or ordinary. For food items, consider creating a healthy recipe that features your product and showcase it on the back of packaging. To help businesses embrace American Heart Month, Lightning Labels is offering a sale that runs through March 1, 2013. Take 15% off new label orders by using code PRESDAY15 at checkout. The maximum discount for orders is $1,000. Free ground shipping is available on regularly priced orders shipped within the U.S. and Canada, though shipping charges apply for printed press proofs. • Vermont Maple Syrup Food Labels A Sticky Situation

Lawmakers Favor Standardized Syrup Food Labels

Vermont is debating whether or not to drop their traditional state food labels for maple syrup. Officials in the state are considering whether to keep their own labels, or conform to an international standardized labeling system. Vermont is the No. 1 syrup producer in the United States but the current labeling system makes it hard to compete with national and global competitors, according to a report by The Associated Press. Producers also fear Vermont's unique standards for labeling syrup are confusing for consumers.

New Syrup Labels Could Help Producers Market More Effectively
Some Vermont producers are reluctant to change their syrup labels, Mike Bennett of the Upper Hudson Maple Producers Association Board from Glen Falls told The Saratogian. Vermont producers believe their top quality syrup, labeled "fancy," is what makes their brand stand out against other competitors. However, uniform labels would make it easier for brands to market their product to consumers in other states and countries, Bennett added.

The syrup label debate has been going on for about eight years now, Bennett told Saratogian. The syrup initiative to standardize labels started in Canada and has worked its way down to Vermont. The AP report said the labeling change, if implemented, would take a few years to fully enact.

New St. Patrick's Day Custom Labels and Stickers Will Bring Out the Holiday Spirit

    Prepare

Lightning Labels, a custom label and sticker printing leader, encourages manufacturers to take advantage of St. Patrick's Day to give products a festive temporary makeover. While Valentine's Day may have just passed, it's never too early to start planning the next marketing campaign. With the gift-giving holidays out of the way, brands now have the opportunity to try new, fun custom packaging ideas. St. Patrick's Day is an especially important holiday for brands because unlike Valentine's Day or Mother's Day, it's not centered exclusively around one target audience like couples or moms. Every age group and demographic celebrates the holiday in a variety of ways. Brands can take advantage of incredible marketing opportunities on St. Patrick's Day by revamping printed stickers and labels. "Young families, couples and friends all celebrate St. Patrick's Day, which means brands have more audience targeting options," says Tammie MacLachlan, Lightning Labels Customer Service Manager. "In addition, seasonal packaging always creates a sense of urgency in consumers, because they realize the holiday and the special version of a product won't be around for long. Even if consumers aren't looking for festive products next month, new custom labels are sure to command attention. Lightning Labels can help companies effectively reach shoppers by providing them high-quality, unique and fun stickers and labels for their products."

4 St. Patrick's Day Marketing Ideas for Custom Labels

By embracing holidays on product custom labels, manufacturers tell consumers that a brand is festive, fun and unique. As marketers ponder which angle to take next month, consider these tips from Lightning Labels: 1. The Luck Of The Irish The four-leaf clover is a great symbol to incorporate into products' packaging next month. Marketers can use the image to help consumers understand how "lucky" they are to find the product. Consider adding text that states how fortunate the company is to have such great followers and fans and thank them. Consumers will appreciate this, which can boost brand image. 2. Saving Big Time Green is a great color for marketers because it can be associated with so many things, including money. St. Patrick's Day is a great time to inform consumers how affordable and valuable a product is, so don't forget to mention it on custom labels and stickers. For example, can consumers get many uses out of the product? Does buying a product eliminate the need for shoppers to purchase several other items? 3. Promote Sustainability Green is also the color of eco-friendliness, a characteristic millions of consumers value and look for when they shop online and in stores. St. Patrick's Day is a great time to remind them of how and why products respect the environment. Lightning Labels is committed to embracing sustainable practices and carries EarthFirst PLA, an eco-friendly label material made from corn instead of petroleum. 4. Help Consumers Celebrate Across the country, St. Patrick's Day is a time to unwind with a pint or two and celebrate. Embrace the party spirit by letting product packaging show consumers how the brand fits into the holiday. For, example, maybe a food product goes great with a traditional Irish beer, or maybe it helps consumers recover after a little too much liquid cheer.

Material Descriptions

Materials

BIOSTONE

One of our eco-friendly options that is actually made of stone—no trees are used. This material should not laminated.

CAST GLOSS

This is another material specially designed for the wine industry. It is paper-based with a high-gloss white finish. Same adhesive and liner as Estate #9.

CHROME (SILVER) BOPP

This material has the same water and oil-resistant properties as our White BOPP and Clear BOPP, but has the "mirror-like" look of shiny chrome.

CLASSIC CREST

Best suited for wine labels, this is a white paper stock with a dull matte finish. It is not suitable for lamination and is therefore not waterproof. Same adhesive and liner as Estate #9.

CLEAR BOPP

This is the clear version of the Polypropylene (BOPP) material. It has the same waterproof qualities as the White BOPP. It provides more of a "no label" look and is also suitable for window stickers (where reverse printing of the image allows the label to be applied to the inside of a glass window and be viewed from the outside).

ESTATE #9

This is a great option for wine labels, gourmet foods or applications where a textured finish is desired. Being a paper stock, it's not as water-resistant or durable as BOPP, but its light cream color and textured feel add a touch of the "unusual" to the right product. It features a special adhesive (removable in 100+ degree hot water) and a stronger liner particularly suited to machine application. Not suitable for lamination.

GOLD POLYESTER (METALIZED)

This material will make your labels shine! Suitable for most labeling applications, it has a strong adhesive backing and must be laminated. Choose glossy laminate to make your label designs pop, or matte for a unique, elegant look.

KRAFT (RECYCLED)

This is a recycled 100% post consumer waste material. It is a 55# paper material that is a wonderful option if an “earthy” appearance is desired. The stronger liner is well suited for machine application. Depending upon face, substrate, water temperature and dwell time, label may be removed in hot water. It is not suitable for lamination; therefore, it is not water or oil resistant.

REMOVABLE WHITE BOPP

This material is the same as our standard BOPP, but has a special, "less aggressive" adhesive designed to allow the label to be removed or re-positioned after application. Depending on the surface it will be applied to, customer testing is strongly recommended. We can provide samples for this purpose.

SATIN CLOTH

Quite the unique material! Yes, it is woven satin acetate cloth. Think wine or spirit labels! This material will make your product packaging POP. The stronger liner is well suited for machine application. Depending upon face, substrate, water temperature and dwell time, label may be removed in hot water.

SQUEEZABLE

A white, 3mil film that is better suited for squeezable applications. This material has proven to work well in a variety of applications, so you can be confident it will perform well for you.

VELLUM (RECYCLED)

A great “green” choice, this 60# vellum is 100% recycled with 100% post consumer waste material. Cannot be laminated. Is neither water nor oil-resistant. The stronger liner is well suited for machine application. Depending upon face, substrate, water temperature and dwell time, label may be removed in hot water.

WHITE BOPP

This is our most commonly used material and is suitable for most applications. It's a polypropylene material with a permanent adhesive. It is impervious to water and oils, and is particularly suitable for bath and body products, as well as food containers.

WHITE EARTHFIRST PLA

A more environmentally friendly alternative to White BOPP. The PLA stands for Polylactic Acid (a biopolymer made from corn rather than petrochemicals). Similar look and feel to BOPP and suitable for most applications, but should not be used directly on candle containers.

WHITE FLEXIBLE VINYL

This is our most substantial material. The vinyl is thicker than BOPP, and is most suitable for outdoor applications where greater strength and durability are needed, or where lengthy exposure to the elements is an issue.

WINDOW DECAL (CLEAR/ULTRA-REMOVABLE)

We offer this window decal option as an alternative to static cling. The face stock is clear with excellent clarity. The adhesive is an ultra-removable featuring excellent weatherability and UV resistance. It removes cleanly from a wide variety of substrates without staining or ghosting. Why worry about static clings staying on when you can have removable adhesive there to hold it in place?

It provides more of a "no label" look and is also suitable for window stickers (where reverse printing of the image allows the label to be applied to the inside of a glass window and be viewed from the outside).

Laminates

High Gloss

High gloss is our most popular laminate. It is the least expensive option and provides protection for the label and a high gloss shiny finish.

Matte

The Matte Laminate provides your label with a dull, non-glossy finish. Some customers consider this achieves a more "natural" look.

Thermal Transfer

This is a gloss laminate that is designed to work with most over-printing thermal transfer printers. We do recommend you get samples first to test through your own printer before placing an order with this laminate.

UV Outdoor Gloss

As the name implies this is best used for labels that will be used outdoors. It has a high gloss finish with excellent UV resistance. It is best paired with our vinyl material for the most durable outdoor label.
