  • December is National Fruitcake Month

    December is National Fruitcake Month

Use Custom Labels to Spruce up Fruitcakes

Does anything say "the holiday season" quite like fruitcake? Although it might appear to be somewhat of a cliche, it is a cliche for a reason, as individuals have shared fruitcakes during the holidays for decades, making it a delicious tradition of sorts. As such, December is National Fruitcake Month.

If you manufacture or sell fruitcakes, as well as other items that are popular this time of year, consider leveraging custom holiday stickers to put a festive spin on your cakes, cookies, candies and more, as this will help your products pop off the shelves.

Food labels will also need to be designed with care, as they must include all of the required information related to ingredients, allergens and other matters regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. However, custom food labels will make it easier to balance informative content on your stickers and product packaging with the imagery consumers respond to best in December.

Customized Holiday Stickers Bring the Joy

You do not necessarily need to take a cut-and-dried approach to the designs on your holiday labels. Doing so would actually not serve your business well, as so many other manufacturers and sellers of fruitcakes and holiday foods will be doing the same thing. Rather, you should work to conceptualize designs that are simultaneously reflective of the holidays this month, but defy the ordinary just enough to stand out from the crowd on the shelves and in the eyes of customers.

One of the best ways to do this is to focus on the brand mission, voice and values. Your messaging is likely unique in some ways, and identifying the core differentiators of your business, then using them as the foundation for these custom food label designs, will help to drive your revenue higher. Additionally, working with marketing and quality assurance teams to make sure all of the required aspects of labeling are handled properly and accurately, while still putting a festive spin on the packaging, will protect your company from risks.

Regardless of which types of products you sell, this can be a great time of year to freshen up the brand initiatives, as the new year is right around the corner.

    Maintaining Safety

Custom food service safety labels are recommended for companies that produce items with common allergens, as the worst outcome possible would be ruining a holiday party due to undisclosed ingredients. Thanks to the customization aspect of these labels, though, it does not need to be a dreary endeavor, nor one that evokes concern in the eyes of your customers.

To ensure the designs are properly, accurately and efficiently printed, consider leveraging the services of a reliable provider such as Lightning Labels. This firm can handle all holiday-related custom label printing needs in a hurry, and is a great partner to have throughout the year thanks to its expansive services and commitment to excellence.

Capitalizing on Gluten Free Diet Awareness Month

    Gluten Free Diet Awareness Month

Although the gluten-free diet was not well-known or commonly discussed only a decade ago, it has grown significantly as a major trend facing the food industry in the time since. Given the fact that more individuals have been diagnosed with Celiac disease, which makes the consumption of certain products containing gluten extremely dangerous and sometimes deadly, this is a serious matter that all food industry businesses must be aware of.

November is Gluten Free Diet Awareness Month, and you can at once capitalize on the opportunities involved and support a good cause by using custom labels on your products. This event is sure to pique the interest of individuals who cannot eat gluten due to allergies, as well as those who have adjusted their diet to omit relevant ingredients simply for health and fitness purposes, and takes place during a month that is traditional busy for the industry at large.

    First, the Importance of Accuracy

Companies must ensure that their food labels are accurate. Gluten free diet labels can help to target a niche piece of the marketplace, but that should be a secondary pursuit following the assurance that all allergens have been declared on products. When they are not, the risk of having to complete a costly recall will be higher, as the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safe Inspection Service has increased efforts to bring misbranding to light of late.

This can cause lost face and hindered brand reputations, as well as immense financial loss. Furthermore, undeclared allergens can end up sickening consumers in extreme situations, and come with an entirely different and even more intense group of risks. Gluten free labels should only be placed on products that do not contain wheat, as well as barley, rye and other grains.

Once contingencies are in place to avoid the prospect of mislabeled products, you can then begin to focus on the labels that will help to position your brand alongside Gluten Free Diet Awareness Month.

    Leveraging Gluten Free Food Labels

You can take several approaches to getting these labels on your products in November to recognize the awareness month event. For one, you can simply incorporate stickers onto the products that direct consumers to websites and other sources of information pertaining to gluten free diets. On the other hand, you might want to go a few steps further and work toward custom gluten free labels that truly stand out from the other items on the shelves.

Custom designs that incorporate the various ingredients and declare the items as being gluten free will likely be a bit more successful during the awareness month, while additional stickers that recognize the event itself can also be helpful. Considering the fact this is the best chance food distributors have to hit the ground running in 2016 and the time is now to contact Lightning Labels about your specific labeling needs.

  • October is National Cookie Month

    October is National Cookie Month

Promote Your Business with National Cookie Month Labels

Who doesn't enjoy a good cookie? If you are a baker or distributor of relevant goods, October might be the best month of all to get the word out about your brand given the fact that it is National Cookie Month in America. Suffice it to say that plenty of people would probably be fine making every month - and day - similar to this event, as cookies are among the most beloved goods in this country and abroad.

National Cookie Month labels can be designed to observe this wonderful event, all the while promoting your brand a bit more and showing that your business operates beyond just the local area. With the right balance between information and imagery that focuses upon National Cookie Month and that which brings your company into focus, this can be a highly profitable period for any baker.

Considerations for Your National Cookie Month Stickers

Stickers are an affordable and relatively simple way to raise awareness about a range of matters and causes, and National Cookie Month is no different. Businesses can either take a straightforward approach to design, with little more than words in black and white to show support of the event, or instead take a more creative angle through the use of fun imagery and pictures that will pop off the shelves in the stores.

Always consider getting your marketing and operations teams involved in these efforts, as employees have more valuable insights to offer than you might think and exhausting every creative resource is key to effective brand management. What's more, considering the fact that the busy holiday shopping season is right around the corner, including the biggest eating day of the year in Thanksgiving, this can be a good opportunity to get the word out about your bakery for higher revenue growth in November.

As a note, you might want to leverage National Cookie Month decals that can be placed on cars or other items rather than just the packages of your products. You would be hard-pressed to find an individual who wouldn't support National Cookie Month on their property.

    Customize for Greater Success Rates

Now, there is no shame in taking a boilerplate approach to these matters, but that will not likely have the same positive impacts that would accompany highly customized and unique labels, stickers and decals. Working with an experienced and reliable custom label service provider such as Lightning Labels can ensure that all of the effort you put into the design of these items comes back with high returns, and that the stickers are delivered in a timely fashion following the order.

Additionally, Lightning Labels can help guide bakers through some of the basics involved in the creation and distribution of custom stickers, decals and other marketing-focused items. National Cookie Month will make everyone smile, and getting these label efforts in motion can put your bakery in a strong position through the end of the year.

  • Celebrate National Blueberry Month by Jazzing Up Produce Labels

July is National Blueberry Month. As Blueberry Harvest Season Peaks, Update Produce Labels

According to the United States Highbush Blueberry Council, an agricultural promotional group composed of farmers, importers and processors, the North American blueberry harvest kicks off in April and draws to a close in September. With the peak of the season falling right around Independence Day, it's no wonder July is National Blueberry Month in the U.S., representing the perfect time for blueberry and other fruit-sellers to update their produce labels for summer. This month, people in and around certain areas across the nation - Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; Portland, Oregon; Chincoteague, Virginia; and Ely, Minnesota, to name just four - will be heading to their local blueberry festivals. With blueberries everywhere attendees look, producers need a way to differentiate their offerings from the pack, which is where custom labels truly come in handy.

Labels for Canned Goods Make Produce Stand Out from the Crowd

Of course, the benefits of using standout labels for canned goods aren't only limited to blueberry festivals. The summer is also peak season for farmers markets, where sellers come from far and wide to showcase everything from handmade arts and crafts to baked goods and fresh produce. Whether your specialty is blueberry jams, pies, preserves or simple, unadulterated cartons of blueberries, using crisp, vibrant, professional-quality labels is a great way to attract shoppers' attention and present your brand in a positive light. That being said, labels that score highly on aesthetic appeal but not so well on functionality could end up inadvertently giving your business a bad reputation. Given that so many people are in the habit of washing fruit before they eat it, it's vitally important for carton labels to be durable enough to stand up to a soaking. Moreover, unless you're dealing with a true blueberry fiend who downs every single berry in one sitting, it's safe to say that your offerings are destined for the fridge and maybe even the freezer, so your labels also need to hold up to cold temperatures.

What Makes Good Fruit Product Labels?

There's no one-size-fits-all approach to crafting great fruit product labels, but generally speaking, fruit stickers and labels should be both eye-catching and informative. While blueberries come in cartons and are much too small to feature individual labels, stickers that adhere directly to the product are an option for larger fruits - and taking this approach can also save on packaging costs. Meanwhile, fruits that must be packed into boxes are traditionally showcased in clear containers, so see-through labels can be helpful to maximize visibility for this kind of produce. Everyone knows fruit is healthy, but different kinds have different benefits, and blueberries are no exception. According to Medical Daily, blueberries are low-fat and low-calorie, high in fiber, manganese and Vitamin C, great for improving heart health and brain functioning, and a powerful weapon in the fight against cancer. Why not put some of these attributes right on the label?

  • Personalize Gift Giving with Custom Holiday Stickers

Personalized Holiday StickersCustom Gift Stickers Make a One-of-a-Kind Present

People always strive to be unique with their presents for others and custom gift stickers is one way they can do just that. Perhaps people are crafting a homemade gift or they just want to add a bit of flourish to a gift they bought at the store. Customized stickers, which can be attached to gifts in fun and creative ways, may feature personalized messages, unique images and other visual elements to really tie the gift together.

    Brainstorming Stickers for Christmas Presents

If people have never made customized labels before, they may be drawing blanks trying to come up with stickers for Christmas presents. As is the case with any gift, the perfect present is something that needs to be tailored to the recipient. That being said, here are some ideas people could draw from:

    • Homemade beer: Brewing beer has quickly become a popular past time and what better way of sharing that hobby with others than crafting them a special brew? Custom stickers may feature the recipient's name as well as a holiday message from the gift giver.
    • Custom wine bottles: Many people save bottles of wine to celebrate special occasions - getting a promotion, finding a new job, getting married or birthdays, for example. People could give their friends a bottle of their favorite wine featuring a sticker with a custom message, perhaps remembering a past occasion or establishing conditions for drinking the bottle in the future.
    • Baked goods: The holidays are known for overindulgence and baked goods are some of many Americans' of the favorite treats. Baking special treats for family and friends can be a great gift in and of itself, particularly if it is a special recipe the recipient loves. Instead of handing over just a plastic bag with cookies or brownies, people could print custom stickers to give the package a bit more flair.

    Personalized Holiday Stickers

The key is remembering that personalized holiday stickers have a number of uses. While the aforementioned ideas are some of the more common ones, there are a wide array of gift ideas that could be realized with the right custom sticker. The key is thinking carefully about the recipient and picking a gift and designing a sticker that really suits this person.

  • Spooktacular Ideas for Updating your Custom Halloween Candy Labels and Stickers

Halloween-Candy-Labels-and-StickersHalloween Labels Help Brand Reach Candy Buyers

Now is the time for candy manufacturers to start planning their Halloween labels! With the end of September quickly approaching, there is still plenty of time to come up with a spooky, festive product label for your various sugary treats. Halloween is to confectioners what Christmas is to retailers. Although Valentines Day and other holidays are particularly popular times to give out chocolates and candies, few can match Halloween. According to the National Retail Federation, more than 113 million people will hand out candy this year, with the average person spending $23 on such goods. One report from the National Confectioners Associations suggested that 72% of all candy spending tends to go toward chocolate. The major chocolate staples, such as Reese's and M&Ms, are likely at the top of most peoples' lists, but there is still room in the shopping cart for any candy manufacturer.

What Makes for a Good Halloween-Inspired Candy Sticker?

Product labels and candy stickers are critical to catching customers's attention as they walk down candy aisles. Because all the other candy manufacturers are pulling out the stops for Halloween, confectioners need to bring their A-game and design labels that will help consumers identify their products amid shelves crammed with other options. So, what makes for a good Halloween candy sticker? One look at what other confectioners are doing would suggest utilizing orange and black color schemes, along with imagery associated with Halloween, such as ghosts, bats and pumpkins. For example, Cool and Collected noted that M&M's features its brand characters wearing costumes on labels and packages. This adds a bit of festive cheer and may be just what confectioners need to give their labels and stickers a holiday boost. Additionally, it may even add a "collectible" feel to these products - people may want to see what all the different characters are wearing for Halloween.

    Bakery labels can Follow Suit

Bakery labels should take note of what candy makers are doing with their stickers. Although baked goods are not quite as popular as candy, bakeries can still benefit from Halloween spirit by designing spooky labels. An orange and black color theme combined with iconic Halloween imagery lets customers know these are the perfect baked goods for their parties or whatever other events they may be holding.

  • Prepare for Farmers' Market Season with Custom Bakery Labels

Custom Bakery LabelsCustom Bakery Labels Help Bakers Stand Out in a Crowd

Thanks to Cottage Food Laws, individuals are allowed to operate bakeries from their homes and sell  products to others, and custom bakery labels are crucial to improving sales. Whether people want to hit farmers' markets, sell goods straight from their homes or head online to reach a national audience, custom bakery labels can help brands achieve the professional look they need to really catch the eye of prospective customers. Farmers' markets are the perfect place for young bakeries to start looking for buyers. They allow bakers to get in-tune with the local community and interact with people face-to-face. Additionally, farmers' markets allow  bakers to go straight to the source - they don't need to rely on marketing and advertising to get people to a local bakery shop. However, given the growth of farmers' markets over the past two decades, competition will be fierce. Even though people sell a variety of different food at these locations, bakers will still likely encounter others selling baked goods. This is why they'll need an appealing presentation, complete with ingredient information.

Labels for Baked Goods Have Specific Requirements

Crafting the perfect labels for baked goods isn't just about making a standout package - Cottage Food Laws also have specific requirements that will result in fines and other action if labels don't disclose particular points of information. While these laws vary from state to state, some common label requirements, according to the California Department of Public Health, include:

    • Special notification that baked goods were made in a home kitchen.
    • The registration or permit number of cottage food operation.
    • Ingredients used in the creation of the product in descending order of prominence by weight.
    • Net quantity of the food product in English and metric units.
    • A declaration of the use of any major food allergens, including but not limited to milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, wheat, peanuts and soybeans.
    • The common or descriptive name of the product being sold.
    • The name, city and ZIP code of where the baked good was produced.

Additionally, baked goods must also comply with requirements set forth by the Federal Food and Drug Administration. The FDA governs the usage of terms such as "fat free" and "low sodium," so posting these words on a label improperly can result in significant fines. Nutritional information doesn't always have to be included, but if a health claim is being made, nutrition information including calories, total fat, cholesterol, protein and other specifics must be present on the label.

Personalized Food Labels Can Help Differentiate Products

If bakers are producing a wide variety of baked goods, they may want to consider personalized food labels. This will help them note differences between different types of baked goods they are selling. For example, the label for chocolate chip muffins needs to be different than blueberry muffins - not only does this avoid confusion to customers, it also makes organization easier for the baker. With the summer months quickly coming, farmers' markets will be booming. Bakers looking to get a foothold in the local market should consider selling their products, complete with customized labels, at these events.

Material Descriptions

Materials

BIOSTONE

One of our eco-friendly options that is actually made of stone—no trees are used. This material should not laminated.

CAST GLOSS

This is another material specially designed for the wine industry. It is paper-based with a high-gloss white finish. Same adhesive and liner as Estate #9.

CHROME (SILVER) BOPP

This material has the same water and oil-resistant properties as our White BOPP and Clear BOPP, but has the "mirror-like" look of shiny chrome.

CLASSIC CREST

Best suited for wine labels, this is a white paper stock with a dull matte finish. It is not suitable for lamination and is therefore not waterproof. Same adhesive and liner as Estate #9.

CLEAR BOPP

This is the clear version of the Polypropylene (BOPP) material. It has the same waterproof qualities as the White BOPP. It provides more of a "no label" look and is also suitable for window stickers (where reverse printing of the image allows the label to be applied to the inside of a glass window and be viewed from the outside).

ESTATE #9

This is a great option for wine labels, gourmet foods or applications where a textured finish is desired. Being a paper stock, it's not as water-resistant or durable as BOPP, but its light cream color and textured feel add a touch of the "unusual" to the right product. It features a special adhesive (removable in 100+ degree hot water) and a stronger liner particularly suited to machine application. Not suitable for lamination.

GOLD POLYESTER (METALIZED)

This material will make your labels shine! Suitable for most labeling applications, it has a strong adhesive backing and must be laminated. Choose glossy laminate to make your label designs pop, or matte for a unique, elegant look.

KRAFT (RECYCLED)

This is a recycled 100% post consumer waste material. It is a 55# paper material that is a wonderful option if an “earthy” appearance is desired. The stronger liner is well suited for machine application. Depending upon face, substrate, water temperature and dwell time, label may be removed in hot water. It is not suitable for lamination; therefore, it is not water or oil resistant.

REMOVABLE WHITE BOPP

This material is the same as our standard BOPP, but has a special, "less aggressive" adhesive designed to allow the label to be removed or re-positioned after application. Depending on the surface it will be applied to, customer testing is strongly recommended. We can provide samples for this purpose.

SATIN CLOTH

Quite the unique material! Yes, it is woven satin acetate cloth. Think wine or spirit labels! This material will make your product packaging POP. The stronger liner is well suited for machine application. Depending upon face, substrate, water temperature and dwell time, label may be removed in hot water.

SQUEEZABLE

A white, 3mil film that is better suited for squeezable applications. This material has proven to work well in a variety of applications, so you can be confident it will perform well for you.

VELLUM (RECYCLED)

A great “green” choice, this 60# vellum is 100% recycled with 100% post consumer waste material. Cannot be laminated. Is neither water nor oil-resistant. The stronger liner is well suited for machine application. Depending upon face, substrate, water temperature and dwell time, label may be removed in hot water.

WHITE BOPP

This is our most commonly used material and is suitable for most applications. It's a polypropylene material with a permanent adhesive. It is impervious to water and oils, and is particularly suitable for bath and body products, as well as food containers.

WHITE EARTHFIRST PLA

A more environmentally friendly alternative to White BOPP. The PLA stands for Polylactic Acid (a biopolymer made from corn rather than petrochemicals). Similar look and feel to BOPP and suitable for most applications, but should not be used directly on candle containers.

WHITE FLEXIBLE VINYL

This is our most substantial material. The vinyl is thicker than BOPP, and is most suitable for outdoor applications where greater strength and durability are needed, or where lengthy exposure to the elements is an issue.

WINDOW DECAL (CLEAR/ULTRA-REMOVABLE)

We offer this window decal option as an alternative to static cling. The face stock is clear with excellent clarity. The adhesive is an ultra-removable featuring excellent weatherability and UV resistance. It removes cleanly from a wide variety of substrates without staining or ghosting. Why worry about static clings staying on when you can have removable adhesive there to hold it in place?

Artwork Specifications

Laminates

High Gloss

High gloss is our most popular laminate. It is the least expensive option and provides protection for the label and a high gloss shiny finish.

Matte

The Matte Laminate provides your label with a dull, non-glossy finish. Some customers consider this achieves a more "natural" look.

Thermal Transfer

This is a gloss laminate that is designed to work with most over-printing thermal transfer printers. We do recommend you get samples first to test through your own printer before placing an order with this laminate.

UV Outdoor Gloss

As the name implies this is best used for labels that will be used outdoors. It has a high gloss finish with excellent UV resistance. It is best paired with our vinyl material for the most durable outdoor label.
