  • Gold Labels: Your Guide to Printing Flashy, Metal-Colored Labels

Printing Flashy Labels Gets Consumer Attention

printing flashy labels from Lightning Labels Printing flashy labels can remind consumers of awards and medals.

Printing flashy labels is a good way to catch the shopper's eye. Using silver or gold labels is a sure-fire way to break the monotony of the store shelf. When you're introducing a new product, design or recipe, a metallic shine is a great way to let shoppers know that something is different. For instance, if you have introduced new easy-to-recycle packaging, a silver sticker is a great way to communicate this to shoppers. Especially in the food aisle, most shoppers won't be expecting to see shimmering packaging. In situations where consumers make decisions quickly, using a metallic finish can give products an edge simply by way of being eye-catching. Best of all, metallics, particularly silver, tend to look good with many different colors. This means you can integrate a little sparkle into your labeling strategy without having to overhaul your branding. You can also take advantage of the unique connotations that metallic finishes have when designing labels and stickers.

Gold Labels Can be Used Strategically

Using silver or gold labels makes items appear luxurious and valuable. When most people think of awards and accolades, they usually come with a metallic ribbon or statue. Gold, silver and bronze remind us of winners. Particularly, if your brand has won a taste test, or your company has received some other award, a metallic sticker can more successfully draw attention to this fact than a regular color might. It will also lend a bit more credibility to the claim of being award-winning. Metallics have other connotations as well. Traditionally, they are expensive. Kings and queens adorned themselves in silver and gold. This means adding a metallic sheen can be reminiscent of value and sophistication.

Metal Colored Labels Make Products Look High-Tech

Metal colored labels can be be integrated with other innovative packaging ideas. Metallics have other connotations in the digital age. While they can bring to mind old-school royalty, when implemented with a slightly different color scheme, they can seem tech-savvy. When used with black or gray, silver labels can make packaging take on a futuristic appearance, perfect for any brand that wants to appear ahead of the curve in their industry. Metallics are also a good way to make body product packaging more appealing for male shoppers. Silver and chrome are also reminiscent of speed and efficiency because they bring to mind cars, trains and airplanes.

    Use Metallic Labels Creatively

On top of sending a message, metallics are simply attractive and often more interesting to look at than the average packaging material. They can be eye-catching, but they can also create unique labeling that brings greater attention to your brand's innovative perspective. You can print on top of a silver label in more subtle ways. For example, a refreshing drink company could use silver to portray a crisp lake or body of water on a label. This could also work for snowscapes, or images of cities. No matter what your labeling ideas, metallics can be integrated in refreshing ways.

  • Make Patriotic Custom USA Stickers Stand Out from Standard Red, White and Blue

Custom Stickers With A 'Made In the USA' Label Can Attract Customers

custom USA stickers for packaging Tell consumers exactly where products are made with custom USA stickers.
If your products are manufactured in the states, you should consider how custom stickers featuring a made in the USA label can improve your brand image and expand awareness of your items. Labor Day is coming up and consumers appreciate patriotism year-round, whether it happens to be Memorial Day, Independence Day or time for school to start again. In fact, coupled with their love for America, increasing economic, social and environmental concerns have led many people to only shop for and use products that are manufactured stateside. Questionable working conditions abroad and the toll international product shipping takes on the environment have led many consumers to make a conscious effort to buy items that are made in the United States. Meanwhile, more large companies that once manufactured the bulk of their offerings offshore are now bringing production back to the states, creating more jobs for U.S. workers. Consumers are taking note of such developments and are encouraging them through their purchases. In fact, according to USA Today, the average American is willing to pay 60 percent more for U.S.-made wooden baby toys, 30 percent more for mobile phones manufactured in the states and 19 percent more for American-made gas ranges. You can appeal to the expanding demographic of patriotic shoppers by letting them know your products are made in the USA with attractive and unique custom stickers and labels.

Get Creative with Custom Stickers Printing and Boost Brand Image

The word "patriotic" usually evokes visions of red, white and blue, the star-spangled banner and other traditionally American symbols. While these are commonly recognized icons, they can become repetitive and even cliché. Just walk down the aisles of a supermarket before a national holiday; everything blends together and no products stand out. That's why you should consider going a unique route with your custom stickers printing. Here are two ideas to design eye-catching USA stickers: Incorporate Popular, Yet Unique Images: Instead of including the over-used American flag, consider including an outline of Mount Rushmore, a caricature of the president or a humorous illustration of a bald eagle. Use Labels for Fun Facts About Product Location: Why not explain exactly where a product is made? Consider mentioning where in the country your items are manufactured to add a little character to your brand. You can include a quick phrase about the state, city or town and even include an image of it on your labels. For more design tips, download Lightning Labels' free white paper, "6 Easy-to-Follow Tips to Make a Statement with Colorful Custom Labels and Stickers," accessible from the Lightning Labels Facebook page. These expert printing tips can be applied to custom USA stickers and made in the USA labels to enhance product branding and consumer appeal.

  • English Traffic Light Nutrition Colors Spurs Label Design Discussion

Label Design: Is Color Worth A Thousand Words?

label design - color psychology Photo: John Thorpe Photography (Flickr Creative Commons)
In an effort to more dramatically convey nutrition information, England is moving toward a traffic light ingredient labeling system based on principles of color in label design. In nutritional terms, red is bad, yellow is middle-ground, and green is good. Everything from fat to salt content will carry a colored label along with numerical values (e.g., grams, number of calories). It will replace the country’s current Guideline Daily Amounts (GDA) system. Readily recognized color schemes such as the traffic light are just one way designers can use color to heighten message impact and minimize verbiage on labels where space is scarce. Following are other ways to deploy color for maximize impact: 1. Shading. Different intensities of the same color can connote more or less potent potions, ingredients, concentrations and the like. Color bars spanning light to dark shades can show the strength of everything from coffee to salsa. 2. Psychology. Graphic designer Debi Knight of Knight Design Studio says that different colors tie to emotions and gender. She points out, “Food labeling often features warmer colors because women prefer these colors and do most of the grocery shopping. Two warm colors, red and yellow, also tend to make people hungry—so these show up often on food labels.” She adds, “Men tend to prefer cooler colors such as blue and green. And these colors tend to have a calming influence and make you want to eat less, in contrast to yellow and red, which stimulate and make people more aggressive. Red also puts people in a happier mood.” Given these combinations, label designers can target gender and desired effect. Depending on the product and its marketing, this can get complicated. For example, a nutraceutical product targeted chiefly toward women, such as calming bath salts, raises the issue of whether or not to use warm female-preferred colors or cool calming colors. This is one area where an experienced graphic designer can be invaluable. 3. Context. Labels don’t exist in a vacuum. There’s the color, size and shape of the container to consider, along with variations within the same product line. “Design labels and coloring that look good throughout a series of products,” Knight recommends. In the case of a clear container, the color of the contents come into play and can make the label look different (e.g., color of salsa in a clear bottle will impact label appearance). Notes Knight, “A label can either melt into the bottle or stand out from it. One color can make another look bad. For example, a cobalt bottle with a dark purple or green label will blend in. This isn’t good if you want your label to pop. In some cases, such as wine, subtlety in labeling may be exactly what you do want.” Then, there’s always the issue of competitive products on the shelf. “Generally, make your colors stand out from similar ones on the shelf,” Knight notes.

  • When Less Is More: How to Make Custom Labels Stand Out

Less Color, Content, Design Can Make Custom Labels Stand Out

custom labels - lightning labelsIn our rush to create the most brilliant, impactful, dramatic custom labels in the universe, we sometimes forget that less can be more. Less color (think black-and-white), less content, simpler design all can make your product stand out when stacked up against all others. Do you think this less-is-more concept applies to your product(s)? Make a determination starting with what I like to call the “Armadillo” test, a true story about a Yellow Pages ad. Years ago, in a galaxy seemingly far, far away, a YP ad salesperson proudly presented his then-revolutionary full-color pages featuring different advertisers. All the ads contained multiple colors in stark contrast to the chiefly one color (mostly black) ads that had been YP’s mainstay for many years. As he enthusiastically showed off his multi-color palette, I gently placed a quarter-page black-and-white ad slick for the Armadillo restaurant chain on one corner of a full-color page and asked: “What do you notice first?” Our black-and-white ad, of course, because it stood out prominently from the rest of the color-heavy page.

    Simplify Your Label Look

Now, think about colors, content and design of your custom labels and stickers vis a vis your competition on store shelves, on the internet, and anywhere else you can imagine. Ask yourself: 1. Would fewer colors or even just a black-and-white label make my product pop against the others? 2. Would a label with spartan verbiage and lots of white space make a statement when viewed alongside products that have crammed content into every conceivable nook and cranny? 3. Would a simple, bold design make the product more memorable than its bells-and-whistles competitors seemingly more interested in winning design contests than selling products? There are no right or wrong answers here. It’s a matter of relativity—what do the lion’s share of labels highlight in terms of color, content and design and how do you stand out relative to them? Then view your ideal scenario aligned with realistic requirements. Ask yourself: 1. How will my color scheme impact label printing prices and turnaround? With digital label printing, you’re generally looking at similar pricing and turnaround regardless—as digital processes accommodate many colors and  combinations. If you’re looking at offset printing, check it out first. 2. What absolutely must be included in label content, either for regulatory compliance or in the interest of full and accurate disclosures to consumers? It’s entirely possible that you will decide that more content is needed to allay consumer concerns about quantity and quality of ingredients—and sacrifice coveted white space to this “higher” cause. 3. What design elements will make you look different while maintaining expectations consumers have when buying your product? Remember the movie “Schindler’s List” that was filmed in black-and-white except for the yellow candle flame and little girl’s red coat seen briefly? If you offer a flamboyant product generally depicted in a colorful way, such as hot sauce, you may find that going all black with white type and a touch of color in a chili pepper or other graphic may make you appear “classily colorful,” yet refined—a statement also, perhaps, about the quality of your product.

  • Spring for Colorful Custom Product Labels This Season

The Latest Color Trends Can Bring New Life to Your Custom Product Labels

    custom product labels for spring

    Spring

With warmer weather right around the corner, many companies are ready to give their custom product labels a spring lift with vibrant colors and brighter text. Now that the Pantone Spring 2013 color report is out, there are plenty of colorful ideas you can use to glean some seasonal inspiration. Different hues are known to evoke specific responses in the viewer. With that in mind, here are a few tips and color ideas that will help you freshen up your custom labels this spring.

Emerald Green Will Make Your Product Label Printing Trendy, Attractive

Emerald green is the 2013 Pantone Color of the Year and is the perfect shade for keeping your product label printing on-trend. A bold shade of emerald green will make a label pop while still conveying tranquility. Emerald denotes a feeling of wealth and opulence as well as growth, but its brightness can also energize your product and attract consumers' attention on the shelves. For an elegant and sophisticated label, incorporate silver text against this luxurious green hue.

Brighten Labels for Products with Poppy Reds

As most people know, red conveys confidence, action and passion. When used as an accent against black and ivory shades on your labels for products, this color seems sophisticated and exciting. This is the ideal color to use to attract attention to your product. Due to its popularity in Asia, this shade is also perfect for products that have a large Asian market.

Hues of Blue for Trust and Reliability

Chase away winter blues with deep cobalt shade. Blue is one of the most universally loved colors, and when used on custom product labels, it conveys a sense of trust and reliability to the consumer. Shades of turquoise are light enough to transmit a spring and summer vibe, and its green tone is reminiscent of the water. This color is ideal for use on labels for products related to health and wellness, as it said to promote feeling of peace and relaxation. Shades of blue are also great accent colors to be used with trendy emerald green labels this spring.

    Nectarine Color Schemes for Vibrancy

A hint of orange can add vibrancy to your labels. This color conveys optimism, enthusiasm, warmth and fun. Use this color to uplift. To maintain a sense of sophistication, balance this lighthearted color with a darker shade of blue.

Yellow for Zestful Custom Label Infusions

To lighten any label, try infusing it with a streak of sunny yellow. Known to help stimulate mental abilities, this color is good for products related to education and learning and is ideal for products marketed to children and young adults. Citrus tones denote a cheerful optimism, and as with the color orange, this hue works well for adults when balanced with navy blue [and emerald green] for an optimal balance. No matter which colors you choose for your custom product labels this spring, don't be afraid to freshen up the overall look of your products' springtime design with clean and colorful custom printing projects. • 3 Ways to Prepare Products for Easter with Festive Custom Labels and Stickers

Wish Consumers A 'Hoppy' Easter With Updated Custom Labels And Stickers

    custom labels

    Lightning

Lightning Labels, a custom label and sticker printing leader, is reminding manufacturers Easter is right around the corner. When people are shopping for great deals on Easter basket treats, gifts or products for holiday dinners and gatherings, a cheery and unique Easter design may be just the ticket to grab their attention. A common misconception is that Easter marketing and design should be based on a color palette of pastel colors - soft yellow, greens, pinks and blues - but modern design trends allow for much more creativity when designing holiday product stickers. Consider ditching light green hues for punchy accents of emerald green, the 2013 Pantone Color of the Year, which is sure to stand out from the sea of pastel printed labels and stickers on store shelves and online. "Manufacturers and marketers are encouraged to be unique and create updated Easter labels for their products, which can have a huge impact on their holiday sales," said AnneMarie Campbell, Lightning Labels Business Development Manager. "Because it's so important for products to stand out among competitors, custom printed labels and stickers can be a cost-effective way to regularly update products to reflect upcoming holidays and seasons, keeping people's attention while making sure they don't break the bank."

How To Save Money On Printed Labels and Stickers This Easter

Regardless of the holiday or upcoming event, business owners, manufacturers and individuals can rely on Lightning Labels' digital printing techniques that save money and produce high-quality printed labels and stickers. Not only is digital printing fast - turnaround time is just two to three days after placing the custom label order - manufacturers can have total control over the design process and finished product. Small-business owners and manufacturers have typically avoided custom products so as to not risk spending their budget on updated labels only to get stuck with an abundance of stickers and labels that they won't need or use. But with advances in digital printing making it easier than ever to order the exact amount needed, even for small runs or label testing, now is a great time to give products the seasonal, festive makeovers that will boost sales and customer loyalty.

3 Reasons to Order Easter Product Stickers

Manufacturers who want to get a head start on Easter marketing and create high-quality custom product stickers can follow these three tips: 1. Add A Snappy Sticker To Existing Custom Labels Perhaps product labels were recently revamped or manufacturers are wary how a total Easter makeover will go over with existing customers - not a problem! Consider printing a limited run of Easter-themed stickers that can be affixed to products, then removed later if necessary. These custom labels and stickers may be especially beneficial and attractive to customers if they can double as gift tags, which make basket-stuffing and gift-gifting easy. 2. Turn Holiday Product Stickers Into A Limited-Edition Offer Remind consumers that Easter only comes once a year by offering limited runs of holiday product stickers. Whether these printed labels offer unique designs on standard products or are affixed on items that can only be found around Easter, let people know the clock is ticking for them to make a purchase. 3. Incorporate Easter Printed Labels And Stickers With Current Product Branding Whether a business or manufacturer is focusing on Easter, Passover or spring season themes, it's a chance to connect with consumers and remind them about a brand or product line. Consider taking a current marketing or design scheme, then adding seasonal elements that give it flair, but still make it familiar and recognizable for loyal customers. Lightning Labels is offering 10% off online orders of $500 or more through April 8, 2013, plus a chance to win a 70" flat screen TV using promo code MARCHTV at checkout. • Color Choice Matters When You Print Custom Color Labels

Choose Your Colors Wisely When You Design Your Full Color Labels

    His And Hers Colors
    Browse more data visualization.

Color and gender go hand in hand. It’s not something we think about that often, but it’s all around us. It’s commonly assumed that girls favor pink and boys favor blue but I never knew until this infographic the massive amount of preferred color differentiation between men and women based on color names. The infographic really represents popular color names by gender preference (i.e. male and female) but it also provides us insight for color choice in designing custom color labels.

Color Names Matter When Designing Custom Color Labels

Both and men and women tend to generalize color names: men do so slightly more often than woman, and women prefer calling colors more feminine names while men like using “bodily fluid and excrement terminology,” says Stephen Von Worley. For example, some of the top color names preferred by women are neon lavender (78% female), dusty teal (98% female), coral (82% female), pale sage (98% female), barbie pink (84% female), peacock blue (84% female), and camel (78% female). In contrast, some of the top color names preferred by men are goblin green (93% male), skin (74% male), and mucus (60% male). This not only means that you should probably take into consideration those viscerally named colors when your design your custom product labels, but that you should also be more aware of how the other gender may interpret your full color label based on your color choice. This infographic may make it easier to communicate with the other gender about color choice for your custom color labels, as well as help you rethink some colors you included in your original design. You certainly don’t want the color name mucus (which is kind of a mustardy-green) on your product labels. Perhaps, it makes sense to choose relatively general colors like magenta (51% male) or aqua (57% female) when trying to coordinate color design ideas with your colleagues. It’s now clear to me that men and women have a tendency to call extremely similar colors or the same exact colors by different names. Hopefully this interactive chart can further assist you when you design your full color labels and if not, then just explore! It’s strangely intriguing and incredibly fun to engage with. 6 Favorite Custom Food Label Stickers & Their Color Meanings

I can’t say it enough that Lightning Labels customers always make wonderful product labels! This week I’m particularly impressed by the custom food labels that I’ve come across digging around in our photo archives. I’ve selected six custom food labels that utilize color (or lack thereof) in noteworthy ways to brand their product. Custom food label stickers are designed to attract their target customers, which is why color choice is key. Colors come with emotional baggage or, in other words, color meaning. For instance, blue evokes reliability, security, and or trustworthiness, whereas red suggests energy, passion, and or aggression. When designing your custom food labels, I beg you to take color choice into consideration. Colors bring to mind different feelings and emotions for lots of people and, depending on your branding tone, you will want to be well aware of color meaning.

Explaining the Top 6 Custom Food Labels Through Color

    1. Bubba Rose Biscuit Company's Dog Treats

Easy Guidelines to Follow When Designing Labels

For some of us it’s overwhelming to acknowledge all of the necessary details when it comes to designing labels. There are so many essential components like color, text, and imagery that require careful placement and consideration on a label. In order to simplify the daunting task of designing a label, I've compiled a list of the top 5 design tips to focus on.

Our Tips on Designing Full Color Labels

    1. Color choice is key. As the flow chart demonstrates, colors evoke different feelings and associations. The color scheme you choose for your full color labels should fit with the tone of your product. There are warm colors (i.e. reds, yellows, oranges) and cool colors (i.e. blues, purples, greens). Depending on the mood of your labels, you’ll also want to take color harmony and color contrast into consideration. Color harmony implies colors that are similar like reds and oranges or blues and greens, whereas color contrast implies opposing colors on the color wheel. The most basic examples of color contrast are red and green, blue and orange, and yellow and purple. Using color contrast can help to make an image, graphic, and or text really pop! 2. Use high-quality images. If you’re going to use an image, you should always opt for the highest quality for your full color labels. Resolution matters and, depending on the size of your custom labels, you want the image(s) to be in focus when your labels are printed. A blurry, pixilated, or unclear image will not attract buyers. It’s crucial that the image(s) have clarity in their actual size upon your labels. Please refer to our label artwork specs for design file requirements. 3. Font & text matter. There are thousands of fonts to choose from, so get creative! Don’t use the common everyday fonts like Helvetica or Times New Roman, or even Papyrus. You want to create unique custom labels with their own unique font. Keep in mind that the font needs to be legible and easy to read in order to attract consumers. Also, what you write on your labels affects product sales. Use appropriate language and be relevant! If you’re designing custom labels for a product subjected to government regulations (i.e. food product labels and cosmetic labels), be aware of the legal guidelines for your labels. 4. Clarity & readability is essential. I touched on this above, but consumers have to be able to easily read and understand your label. Realistically, you only have a few seconds to grab the attention of the consumer. Your label design should stand out amongst other similar products by being clear and legible. 5. Assimilate your label design with other marketing messages. Here’s a new interesting thought: consider the design aesthetic of your website and/or advertisements and apply that same aesthetic to your labels. You’re building a brand and it’s important to keep it cohesive and consistent. It will be more recognizable if your labels and other marketing messages utilize similar colors, texts, images, and fonts.   Request a quote and order by Sept. 30, 2012 and receive 15%* off new label orders! Use code CELEBRATE. Good luck label makers! We can’t wait to see the great design ideas you come up with!

One of our eco-friendly options that is actually made of stone—no trees are used. This material should not laminated.

CAST GLOSS

This is another material specially designed for the wine industry. It is paper-based with a high-gloss white finish. Same adhesive and liner as Estate #9.

CHROME (SILVER) BOPP

This material has the same water and oil-resistant properties as our White BOPP and Clear BOPP, but has the "mirror-like" look of shiny chrome.

CLASSIC CREST

Best suited for wine labels, this is a white paper stock with a dull matte finish. It is not suitable for lamination and is therefore not waterproof. Same adhesive and liner as Estate #9.

CLEAR BOPP

This is the clear version of the Polypropylene (BOPP) material. It has the same waterproof qualities as the White BOPP. It provides more of a "no label" look and is also suitable for window stickers (where reverse printing of the image allows the label to be applied to the inside of a glass window and be viewed from the outside).

ESTATE #9

This is a great option for wine labels, gourmet foods or applications where a textured finish is desired. Being a paper stock, it's not as water-resistant or durable as BOPP, but its light cream color and textured feel add a touch of the "unusual" to the right product. It features a special adhesive (removable in 100+ degree hot water) and a stronger liner particularly suited to machine application. Not suitable for lamination.

GOLD POLYESTER (METALIZED)

This material will make your labels shine! Suitable for most labeling applications, it has a strong adhesive backing and must be laminated. Choose glossy laminate to make your label designs pop, or matte for a unique, elegant look.

KRAFT (RECYCLED)

This is a recycled 100% post consumer waste material. It is a 55# paper material that is a wonderful option if an “earthy” appearance is desired. The stronger liner is well suited for machine application. Depending upon face, substrate, water temperature and dwell time, label may be removed in hot water. It is not suitable for lamination; therefore, it is not water or oil resistant.

REMOVABLE WHITE BOPP

This material is the same as our standard BOPP, but has a special, "less aggressive" adhesive designed to allow the label to be removed or re-positioned after application. Depending on the surface it will be applied to, customer testing is strongly recommended. We can provide samples for this purpose.

SATIN CLOTH

Quite the unique material! Yes, it is woven satin acetate cloth. Think wine or spirit labels! This material will make your product packaging POP. The stronger liner is well suited for machine application. Depending upon face, substrate, water temperature and dwell time, label may be removed in hot water.

SQUEEZABLE

A white, 3mil film that is better suited for squeezable applications. This material has proven to work well in a variety of applications, so you can be confident it will perform well for you.

VELLUM (RECYCLED)

A great “green” choice, this 60# vellum is 100% recycled with 100% post consumer waste material. Cannot be laminated. Is neither water nor oil-resistant. The stronger liner is well suited for machine application. Depending upon face, substrate, water temperature and dwell time, label may be removed in hot water.

WHITE BOPP

This is our most commonly used material and is suitable for most applications. It's a polypropylene material with a permanent adhesive. It is impervious to water and oils, and is particularly suitable for bath and body products, as well as food containers.

WHITE EARTHFIRST PLA

A more environmentally friendly alternative to White BOPP. The PLA stands for Polylactic Acid (a biopolymer made from corn rather than petrochemicals). Similar look and feel to BOPP and suitable for most applications, but should not be used directly on candle containers.

WHITE FLEXIBLE VINYL

This is our most substantial material. The vinyl is thicker than BOPP, and is most suitable for outdoor applications where greater strength and durability are needed, or where lengthy exposure to the elements is an issue.

WINDOW DECAL (CLEAR/ULTRA-REMOVABLE)

We offer this window decal option as an alternative to static cling. The face stock is clear with excellent clarity. The adhesive is an ultra-removable featuring excellent weatherability and UV resistance. It removes cleanly from a wide variety of substrates without staining or ghosting. Why worry about static clings staying on when you can have removable adhesive there to hold it in place?

CAST GLOSS

This is another material specially designed for the wine industry. It is paper-based with a high-gloss white finish. Same adhesive and liner as Estate #9.

Laminates

High Gloss

High gloss is our most popular laminate. It is the least expensive option and provides protection for the label and a high gloss shiny finish.

Matte

The Matte Laminate provides your label with a dull, non-glossy finish. Some customers consider this achieves a more "natural" look.

Thermal Transfer

This is a gloss laminate that is designed to work with most over-printing thermal transfer printers. We do recommend you get samples first to test through your own printer before placing an order with this laminate.

UV Outdoor Gloss

As the name implies this is best used for labels that will be used outdoors. It has a high gloss finish with excellent UV resistance. It is best paired with our vinyl material for the most durable outdoor label.
